Imagine opening your closet to a space that’s organized and has all of your clothes on full display, that makes it easy to get ready each day… the key to the closet of your dreams starts with cleaning out the one you already have and refining your wardrobe! To get started focus on these 3 areas and check out the amazing Amazon finds to help you organize while you #springcleanyourcloset!
As we shared in “refine your wardrobe” some ladies want to purge or clean-out everything that no longer align with their new style immediately, while others start slowly by removing items that no longer fit correctly, make them happy when wearing or things that haven’t been worn in some time! Notice we said “removing”… some clients don’t want to get rid of items entirely and that is a personal choice! Maybe you put them aside where you can’t see the items for a set period of time to ensure you can part with them BEFORE you remove them from your life… and we strongly encourage donating to local charities and women’s shelters whenever possible, when the time to part ways feels right, of course!
Let’s get into it…
Area/Step 1: Your Hanging Items! We recommend you look and touch each hanging item and determine it’s place. Plan to spend some time in your closet to give your wardrobe the justice it deserves! Our rule of thumb is (1) If you didn’t wear it last season, try it on to decide keep or donate… you never know… you could have just missed it in your overpacked closet. (2) If you haven’t worn it in a couple of seasons (or are waiting to fit back into it) chances are you’re not going to wear it and it’s simply taking up space in your closet (and your mind)… we recommend that you prepare to part with it and put those items into the donation pile. (3) If you love it and wear it, leave the favorites hanging. You love these items, so keep them! Area/Step 2: Your drawers. With time on your side, it’s best to pull out all the contents of each drawer and follow our rule of thumb we followed for the hanging items: 1) Try on the items you didn’t wear last season and determine it’s place. 2) Add all the pieces that have not seen the light of day for two years or more (or are taking up space in your mind – that one day…) to the donation pile and 3) And finally the loves, the keepers, give them a fluff and fold in a clean and organized way back in your drawers using dividers or inserts. Area/Step 3: Your accessories! Accessories are an important part of all wardrobes and can be timeless items that complete any outfit. The right earrings, belt, bag or shoes can take an outfit from day to night or the office to dinner. The trick is to be diverse with your items not keeping too many of one style. As an example, no one needs 21 little black clutches so we recommend breaking these down between casual and dressy, or based on your capsule wardrobes (see our capsule craze blog). Similarly, you might want to have the perfect crossbody bag for music in the park and have the perfect black clutch with crossbody option for date night. #springcleanyourcloset should be rejuvenating and hopefully therapeutic to some degree. Think of it as shedding some proverbial weight or baggage, pun intended! I read once that it’s a good approach to rid by the 15’s… so each season I go through my wardrobe and donate at minimum 15 items following our rule of thumb above. Most of the time it is more but as time goes on, I’ve gotten more refined with my capsule wardrobe and add only those seasonal hyper pieces to enhance my seasonal wardrobe making my #springcleaning much easier and faster!
